Rep. Paul Novotny released a legislative update on Apr. 18 addressing recent developments at the Minnesota Capitol, including tax issues and a new school safety proposal.

Novotny said many Minnesotans are concerned about being overtaxed, especially following Tax Day earlier this week. He noted that the final deadline for bills had just passed, with committees wrapping up their work except for the tax committee, which will continue until the end of session on May 17.

He said House Republicans have proposals ready to address these concerns: “House Republicans have proposals (see above) ready to go that would ease the burden, rein in costs, and bring some common sense back to how we tax Minnesotans.” Novotny added that he is committed to making sure constituents’ voices are heard throughout the process.

The update also highlighted a House Republican school safety proposal developed after last fall’s tragedy at Annunciation Catholic School. The plan was shaped by input from superintendents, teachers, parents, and students across Minnesota. “At its core, this proposal is about making sure every student, no matter where they attend school, feels safe when they walk through those doors each morning,” Novotny said.

Despite bipartisan elements in the plan and previous support from both parties for similar measures, Novotny reported that House Democrats voted against an amendment needed to advance it out of committee: “Instead of moving forward on solutions we largely agree on…the conversation stalled over broader policy debates…We can do both. Minnesota families expect us to do both.” He emphasized his belief that delaying action leaves schools without resources they need.

Novotny also discussed local option sales taxes considered by the House Taxes Committee as a way for cities and counties to fund infrastructure projects through local referendums rather than statewide taxes. He encouraged continued dialogue with constituents and expressed gratitude for their support: “As always, I am so grateful for your continued support and I’m so grateful for the opportunity to represent you…I’m here to listen and work together for our community’s success!”
