Minnesota State Representative Nathan Nelson announced on April 24 that the final weeks of the 2026 legislative session are underway, with significant developments taking place at the Capitol. Nelson said that all bills still under consideration have cleared their committee deadlines, marking a crucial phase in the lawmaking process.

Nelson emphasized the importance of constituent engagement in shaping legislation, referencing a recent example where a local resident’s concerns about safety on the Willard Munger Trail led to a bill hearing. He said, “A single conversation turned into a hearing in the final stretch of session—that’s almost unheard of. It’s proof that your voice carries more weight than you might think.”

The Willard Munger State Trail bill sought funding for rehabilitation and safety improvements along its more than 70-mile route from Hinckley to Duluth. Although this measure did not advance out of committee, Nelson highlighted how quickly it received attention due to community input.

Nelson also reported progress on House File 3508, which updates Minnesota’s Dairy Assistance, Investment, and Relief Initiative (DAIRI) program by changing eligibility criteria to better support dairy farmers participating in federal programs. The bill passed with bipartisan support and awaits action by the Governor. “If you’re investing in your farm…you shouldn’t be left out because of a technicality in timing,” Nelson said.

In addition to legislative work, Nelson shared his recent involvement with the Civil Air Patrol Legislative Squadron after receiving his membership certificate for 2026. He described CAP as an organization critical to emergency services and youth education across Minnesota.

Reflecting on meetings with Pine County veterans, Nelson discussed issues such as property taxes and veteran suicide while expressing support for measures like the Major Richard Star Act aimed at correcting benefit policies for medically retired veterans: “Supporting efforts like the Major Richard Star Act is one way we can begin to honor that promise.” He encouraged constituents to continue sharing their views during this pivotal period.
