Minnesota State Representative John Burkel released a legislative update on Apr. 30 covering several issues affecting northwest Minnesota, including special education services, proposed penalties for not flying the new state flag, and ongoing Medicaid fraud investigations.
Burkel said he is co-authoring HF 3757 to support the Level IV Regional Education Center project in East Grand Forks. He said Rep. Steve Gander has been instrumental in advancing this initiative: “He understands what many of us in northwest Minnesota have been saying for years: families in our region deserve access to high-quality specialized educational services close to home.” Burkel added that the facility would provide needed resources for students with significant educational and behavioral needs and help rural districts share resources more effectively.
The update also addressed a new bill that would penalize towns for displaying an older version of the Minnesota state flag. According to Burkel, “a bill House Democrats are sponsoring would mandate a 10% reduction in a city’s or county’s government aid if that jurisdiction displays any flag other than the newly adopted one.” He criticized the process by which the current flag was chosen and said communities should not be punished for honoring historical symbols.
Burkel reported on recent law enforcement actions targeting Medicaid fraud in Minnesota. He wrote that federal authorities executed 22 search warrants connected to alleged fraud involving child care providers, including Quality Learning Center. The Department of Homeland Security said the agency “executed criminal search warrants in Minneapolis relating to the rampant fraud of American taxpayers dollars,” adding that DHS “will continue working to deliver answers to the American people on how their taxpayer dollars were abused.” Citing media reports, Burkel noted billions have been lost due to fraudulent activities within high-risk programs over recent years.
He concluded his message by mentioning his presentation of HF2823 with Superintendent Tomas Loberg from Goodridge Public School before the Tax Committee.
