Rep. Ilhan Omar, a member of the U.S. Congress representing Minnesota’s 5th district, has recently shared her perspectives on several pressing issues through social media posts.
On May 7, 2025, Rep. Omar issued a statement concerning the Trump Administration’s decision to deport migrants to Libya. In her post, she shared a link to her full statement: “Rep. Omar’s statement on the Trump Administration’s decision to deport migrants to Libya: https://t.co/FJ2I6eVH3Y”.
Later that day, Rep. Omar expressed concerns about actions taken by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). She stated that students and faculty are being targeted and detained for engaging in protected speech. Her tweet reads: “Students and faculty are being targeted by ICE, detained, and silenced for engaging in protected speech. This is what authoritarianism looks like.”
In another post on the same day, Rep. Omar invited her followers to watch her closing remarks at a House Democrats Budget hearing: “WATCH: My closing remarks at the @HouseDemsBudget hearing https://t.co/iFL4Umy8dY”.
Ilhan Omar has served in Congress since 2019 after succeeding Keith Ellison and previously served in the Minnesota House of Representatives from 2017 to 2019. Born in Mogadishu, Somalia in 1982, she currently resides in Minneapolis and holds a BA from North Dakota State University.
