Rep. Ilhan Omar, a U.S. Congress member representing Minnesota’s 5th district since 2019, shared insights into her recent activities through a series of tweets. Born in Mogadishu, Somalia, and currently residing in Minneapolis, Omar has been actively engaging with her constituents and participating in various initiatives.

On May 9, 2025, Rep. Omar tweeted about her productive District Work Week in April within CD5. She emphasized her commitment to cogovernance by connecting with Minnesota students, senior residents, and community advocates. The tweet read: “We had another busy and productive District Work Week in CD5 this April! Connecting with Minnesota students, senior residents, and community advocates, we’re putting our promise of cogovernance into action.”

Later the same day on May 9, she highlighted the upcoming Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive scheduled for Saturday. She encouraged participation by asking people to leave non-perishable food items by their mailboxes for collection by letter carriers who would deliver them to local food banks. Her message underscored the issue of hunger affecting one in ten Americans: “This Saturday is the Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive! Leave a bag of non-perishable food by your mailbox and your letter carrier will deliver it to a local food bank.”

On May 10, Omar reflected on her week spent in Washington from May 5-9. She participated in the Feminist Peace Initiative press conference where she advocated for a foreign policy focused on peace rather than militarism: “Another busy week in Washington! Here’s what I’ve been up to: (May 5-9) Spoke at the Feminist Peace Initiative press conference calling for a foreign policy rooted in peace.”

Omar has served as a congresswoman since succeeding Keith Ellison and was previously part of the Minnesota House of Representatives from 2017 to 2019. She holds a BA from North Dakota State University.
