Rep. Ilhan Omar, currently serving in the U.S. Congress representing Minnesota’s 5th district, has recently shared a series of tweets addressing concerns related to educational institutions and student loan forgiveness.

On June 4, 2025, Rep. Omar posted a link to a full statement on her social media platform, inviting followers to “read the full statement here”.

In a subsequent tweet on June 5, 2025, she raised questions regarding Secretary McMahon’s decision to rescind a $37 million fine against Grand Canyon University. Rep. Omar expressed concern that Secretary McMahon “couldn’t explain why the fine was pulled or if the agency would do right by defrauded borrowers,” emphasizing that “students deserve answers.” The post can be viewed here.

Later that day, Rep. Omar highlighted an issue affecting nearly 1.4 million borrowers from fraudulent universities who have been approved for loan forgiveness but are still awaiting action from the Department of Education. She noted with disappointment that “Secretary McMahon couldn’t clearly say whether these defrauded borrowers will” receive their due relief as expected. This tweet is available here.

Rep. Ilhan Omar has served in Congress since 2019 after replacing Keith Ellison and previously served in the Minnesota House of Representatives from 2017 to 2019. Born in Mogadishu, Somalia in 1982, she resides in Minneapolis and graduated from North Dakota State University with a BA in 2011.
