Rep. Ilhan Omar, a member of the U.S. Congress representing Minnesota’s 5th district since 2019, has been vocal about her opposition to recent legislative efforts she describes as harmful to her constituents and the broader American public.

On July 2, 2025, Omar criticized what she referred to as “Donald Trump’s Big, Ugly Bill,” stating that it would “rip away health care from over 170,000 Minnesotans.” She described the situation as “shameful” and vowed to do everything in her power to fight back against the bill.

The following day, on July 3, Omar provided an update on the legislative process. She noted that Speaker Johnson was facing difficulties in securing enough votes for the bill. In her tweet, she emphasized that “this bill will be DEVASTATING for the American people,” reiterating her commitment to opposing it.

Later on July 3, Omar expressed strong disapproval of what she called a “big ugly budget bill.” She outlined its potential impacts: “- Kicks 17 million off their health insurance – Cuts nutrition assistance for kids – Biggest transfer of wealth from the poor to the rich in history” and concluded with a resolute “Hell NO.”

Omar’s political career began in the Minnesota House of Representatives from 2017 until she joined Congress in 2019. Born in Mogadishu, Somalia in 1982 and now residing in Minneapolis, Omar holds a BA from North Dakota State University.
