Rep. Ilhan Omar, a U.S. Congress member representing Minnesota’s 5th District since 2019, has been actively engaging in discussions and hearings to address various issues affecting her constituents and beyond.

On June 6, 2025, Omar reported that she met with Hennepin County Commissioners Irene Fernando and Marion Greene. The meeting focused on discussing projects aimed at strengthening public transportation networks across the Fifth District and the state. “I met with Hennepin County Commissioners Irene Fernando and Marion Greene to discuss projects that will strengthen public transportation networks across the Fifth District and the state.”

Earlier in the week, Omar was involved in activities in Washington, D.C., where she continued her advocacy for her district. On June 6, she shared insights into her work over the past week, highlighting her efforts during a committee hearing where she questioned Department of Education Secretary Linda McMahon about issues related to misleading practices within the department. “We just had another busy week here in Washington! Here’s how I was fighting for the Fifth (June 2-6): I questioned Department of Education Secretary Linda McMahon during Wednesday’s @EdWorkforceDems Committee hearing on why her department cannot confirm that misled and defrauded”

In addition to her legislative work, Omar engaged with regional officials from Refugees International to receive updates on conflicts impacting Sudan and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). She sat down with these officials to better understand how these conflicts are affecting regional stability. “I sat down with regional officials from @Refugees to get an update on the impacts of the conflicts in Sudan and the DRC on the region.”

Omar, born in Mogadishu, Somalia in 1982, currently resides in Minneapolis. She graduated from North Dakota State University in 2011 with a Bachelor of Arts degree.
