Representative Ilhan Omar, who has been serving in the U.S. Congress representing Minnesota’s 5th district since 2019, recently shared her involvement in various political and social issues through a series of tweets. Born in Mogadishu, Somalia, Omar has been an active voice on both domestic and international matters.

On May 16, 2025, Rep. Omar tweeted about her participation with the Congressional Black Caucus (CBC) and African Ambassadors to “uplift the global African diaspora and chart a bold path forward for U.S.-Africa policy.” This engagement highlights her ongoing commitment to strengthening ties between the United States and Africa.

In another tweet from the same day, Omar expressed her opposition to a proposed budget bill by the GOP. She stated that the bill “slashes Medicaid and SNAP, boosts ICE, and hands tax breaks to billionaires,” noting that it “did not pass committee.” Her statement underscores her stance against policies she views as detrimental to social welfare programs.

Additionally, Rep. Omar mentioned meeting with Grace Shimizu to advocate for justice concerning Japanese Latin Americans who were unjustly interned under the Alien Enemies Act. This reflects her dedication to addressing historical injustices faced by minority communities.

Omar was born in Mogadishu in 1982 and later moved to Minneapolis where she currently resides. She graduated from North Dakota State University in 2011 with a Bachelor of Arts degree.
