Rep. Ilhan Omar, who has been serving in the U.S. Congress representing Minnesota’s 5th district since 2019, recently shared updates on her official Twitter account regarding various initiatives and recognitions. Her posts reflect ongoing efforts in policy discussions and community engagement.

On May 8, 2025, Rep. Omar hosted a member-level US-Africa Policy Working Group briefing to address “the devastating human impacts of Trump and DOGE’s dismantling of USAID and cuts to humanitarian and development assistance.” The briefing aimed to inform members about the real-world consequences of these policy changes.

Later that day, she recognized Ted Pouliot for his extensive service to the Minneapolis community. At 91 years old, Pouliot continues his contributions by painting to raise funds for local nonprofits. Rep. Omar noted that “Ted truly embodies what it means to live a life of service.”

On May 9, during Public Service Recognition Week, Rep. Omar expressed her gratitude for federal workers who maintain essential government functions despite challenges from the current administration. She emphasized the importance of supporting these workers by stating “it’s more important than ever to stand with them.”

Rep. Ilhan Omar was born in Mogadishu, Somalia in 1982 and currently resides in Minneapolis. She graduated from North Dakota State University in 2011 with a Bachelor of Arts degree.
