Representative Ilhan Omar, a member of the U.S. Congress representing Minnesota’s 5th district since 2019, recently shared her thoughts on several pressing issues through a series of tweets. Born in Mogadishu, Somalia, and now residing in Minneapolis, Omar has been an active voice in American politics.

On June 19, 2025, Rep. Omar reflected on Juneteenth by stating “On Juneteenth, we remember that freedom is not always swift but it is always worth the fight. It’s a powerful reminder of how long justice can take to reach those who deserve it most.” She emphasized the celebration of Black freedom and resilience while acknowledging the ongoing work needed to address systemic issues.

In another tweet dated June 20, 2025, she criticized actions taken by the Trump Administration regarding refugees. She stated “As the Trump Administration attacks refugees, turning their pain into political stunts, closing doors when we should be opening them…” Omar highlighted the importance of standing with refugees as part of upholding core values and beliefs.

On June 22, 2025, Rep. Omar issued a statement concerning U.S. military actions in Iran: “The strikes on Iran… mark a dangerous and reckless escalation of an already volatile conflict in the Middle East.” She expressed concern over these actions being executed without congressional authorization and warned against further military escalations.

Omar’s background includes serving in both federal and state legislatures since her election to Congress following Keith Ellison’s tenure. Her academic credentials include a BA from North Dakota State University obtained in 2011.
