Representative Ilhan Omar, currently serving in the U.S. Congress for Minnesota’s 5th district, has recently shared her views on various issues through a series of tweets. Omar, who succeeded Keith Ellison in 2019 and previously served in the Minnesota House of Representatives, continues to engage with pressing political topics and societal concerns.

On May 7, 2025, Omar highlighted the efforts of Professor David Cole from Georgetown University in defending free speech. She noted that “Professor @DavidCole_Gtown has spent his career defending free speech.” She criticized what she described as “McCarthy-style attacks on dissent” by House Republicans, particularly against pro-Palestine voices and non-citizens.

In another tweet dated May 8, 2025, Omar addressed economic challenges faced by Minnesotans. She stated that “While Minnesotans are still struggling to put food on the table, keep a roof over their head, and afford their medications,” she accused Donald Trump and Republicans of planning cuts to social security programs to fund a $1 trillion Pentagon budget.

Omar also expressed gratitude towards Rachel Cohen for her advocacy efforts in a tweet from May 8, 2025. She recounted meeting Cohen and thanked her for her courage to speak out amidst adversity. Omar remarked that “At a time when silence is easy, she chose to speak out rather than compromise her values.” Emphasizing Cohen’s role as an example of democratic protection.

Omar was born in Mogadishu, Somalia in 1982 and moved to Minneapolis where she currently resides. A graduate of North Dakota State University with a BA earned in 2011, she remains an active voice on issues impacting both her constituents and broader national conversations.
