Rep. Ilhan Omar, currently serving in the U.S. Congress and representing Minnesota’s 5th district, has voiced strong criticism against recent actions by the government through a series of tweets.

On June 12, 2025, Omar addressed an incident involving Senator Padilla. She described the event as “a disgrace,” emphasizing that elected officials are meant to represent their constituents. She stated that when such officials are mistreated for performing their duties, it signifies a departure from democratic principles: “What happened to Sen. Padilla is a disgrace…You don’t have to wonder what a fascist regime looks like. This is it.”

Later that day, Omar criticized the current administration’s approach towards law enforcement on American streets. She claimed that masked agents were targeting immigrants and suppressing dissenting voices: “This administration is unleashing a police state on American streets with masked agents targeting immigrants who follow the law and silencing dissent.” Omar expressed solidarity with those opposing these measures.

On June 13, 2025, she reported visiting Republican leadership offices to urge support for investigating the alleged attack on Senator Padilla. Her efforts were met with disappointment as she perceived a lack of action: “I went to Senate and House Republican leadership’s office today demanding they support an investigation into the attack on Senator Padilla…they lack a backbone in the face of this administration’s lawlessness.”

Omar has been active in U.S politics since replacing Keith Ellison in Congress in 2019 and previously served in the Minnesota House of Representatives from 2017-2019.
