U.S. Representative Ilhan Omar, who represents Minnesota’s 5th district in Congress, has recently used her social media platform to criticize government spending priorities and U.S. foreign policy actions.
On March 26, 2026, Omar wrote, “Let’s be honest: when it comes to war, there is always money. But we’re told there’s never enough to improve the lives of working families. Fiscal responsibility means nothing if it only applies to children, workers, seniors, and poor families.”
Later that day, she addressed U.S. policy toward Cuba in another post: “Trump’s oil blockade is strangling an entire nation. Families are going without food. Water systems are failing. Hospitals are struggling to stay open. This is economic warfare. I’m calling for an immediate end to this cruel and indefensible blockade. Hands off Cuba.”
On March 27, Omar commented on recent Congressional developments regarding a Department of Homeland Security shutdown: “House Republicans just rejected the Senate’s deal to end the DHS shutdown. They would rather let TSA workers go unpaid than sacrifice a single dollar of funding for ICE. It’s reprehensible.”
Omar has served as a member of the U.S. House of Representatives since 2019 after replacing Keith Ellison and previously served in the Minnesota House of Representatives from 2017 to 2019. She was born in Mogadishu, Somalia in 1982 and currently resides in Minneapolis at age 40. Omar earned her bachelor’s degree from North Dakota State University in 2011.
