Ilhan Omar, a U.S. Congress member representing Minnesota’s 5th district since 2019, has shared her views on several key issues through recent social media posts. Omar, who succeeded Keith Ellison and previously served in the Minnesota House of Representatives from 2017 to 2019, expressed concerns about workplace safety regulations, international relations with Africa, and domestic fiscal policies.
On May 15, 2025, Omar criticized the Department of Energy (DOGE) for undermining agencies tasked with ensuring workplace safety. She stated: “No job should ever be a death sentence. Yet, DOGE is gutting the very agencies designed to keep people safe.” She emphasized the importance of funding OSHA and NIOSH to save lives.
Later that day, Omar highlighted her participation in a discussion hosted by the Congressional Black Caucus with African Ambassadors. She noted: “The Congressional Black Caucus hosted a discussion with African Ambassadors to discuss the vital role of the global African diaspora.” As Chair of the U.S. Africa Policy Working Group, she shared insights on supporting the diaspora and future collaborations.
On May 16, 2025, Omar voiced strong opposition to a budget proposal put forth by House Republicans. She described it as “a big, ugly bill!” criticizing it for transferring wealth from lower-income individuals to billionaires. Omar concluded by stating her vote against it: “I voted NO!”
Omar was born in Mogadishu, Somalia in 1982 and moved to Minneapolis where she currently resides. A graduate of North Dakota State University with a BA earned in 2011, she continues to advocate for progressive policies within Congress.
