Representative Ilhan Omar, a U.S. Congress member representing Minnesota’s 5th district since 2019, recently shared insights from her legislative activities on social media. Her focus spans worker compensation reform, free speech issues in relation to antisemitism discussions, and budgetary concerns regarding Social Security and military spending.

On May 10, 2025, Rep. Omar highlighted her role as Ranking Member of the Education and Workforce Protections Subcommittee during a hearing focused on “reforming worker compensation”. She emphasized her commitment to protecting federal workers and ensuring they receive fair treatment.

In another post dated May 10, 2025, she recounted her participation in a House Education & Workforce hearing on antisemitism. During this session, she engaged with Professor David Cole about his views on free speech. According to Omar, Cole “rightly called out House Republicans’ McCarthy-style attacks on dissent—especially targeting pro-Palestine voices and non-citizens.”

Further addressing fiscal policy matters on the same day, Omar criticized proposals by Trump and Republican lawmakers to reduce Social Security funding in favor of increasing the Pentagon’s budget by $1 trillion. In a House Budget hearing, she questioned the rationale behind allocating significant funds to a department that has not passed an audit: “While Minnesotans struggle with basic needs…” she stated.

Omar was born in Mogadishu, Somalia in 1982 and resides in Minneapolis. She holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from North Dakota State University obtained in 2011.
