Rep. Ilhan Omar, who represents Minnesota’s 5th district in the U.S. Congress, recently shared her thoughts on several issues through a series of tweets. Omar has been a member of Congress since 2019, after serving in the Minnesota House of Representatives. Born in Mogadishu, Somalia, she now resides in Minneapolis and is an alumna of North Dakota State University.

On March 5, 2025, Omar expressed her condolences to Congressman Sylvester Turner’s loved ones and staff following his passing. In her tweet, she noted that although Turner served for a brief period, he was dedicated to fighting for his district, particularly in his efforts to protect Medicaid. “Sending my condolences to Congressman Sylvester Turner’s loved ones and staff…”

Later that day, Omar addressed issues facing veterans under the current administration. She criticized what she described as disgraceful attacks against veterans and emphasized their honorable service to the country. Omar pledged not to remain silent while veterans are treated poorly. “Chris stood alongside his fellow veterans to call out the disgraceful attacks against them from this administration…”

In another post on the same day, Omar highlighted the importance of voting rights by quoting John Lewis on the sacred nature of voting. She announced her participation with colleagues in reintroducing the John R. Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act as part of efforts to combat voter suppression. “As John Lewis said, ‘The vote is precious…'”
