Rep. Ilhan Omar, a U.S. Congresswoman representing Minnesota’s 5th district since 2019, shared her thoughts and experiences on recent events through a series of tweets.

On June 13, 2025, Rep. Omar commented on international affairs, specifically the resumption of talks with Iran and actions taken by Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu. She expressed concern about potential conflict, stating “Just as talks with Iran were set to resume, Netanyahu launches a strike and declares a state of emergency. He is provoking a war Americans don’t want. We should not allow ourselves to be dragged into yet another conflict, against our will, by a foreign leader pursuing his own”.

Later that day, she reflected on domestic issues after meeting with small business owners in uptown areas. Omar discussed the challenges faced by these businesses and emphasized the importance of support from different levels of government: “I had the opportunity to meet with small business owners from uptown to hear directly about the support they need from local, state, and federal leaders to succeed.”

On June 14, 2025, Omar expressed her grief over the tragic loss of Rep. Melissa Hortman and her husband Mark due to political violence. She described Hortman as “a dear friend who showed me how to lead with passion and integrity” and extended prayers for Sen. John Hoffman and his wife Yvette.

Ilhan Omar has served in Congress since replacing Keith Ellison in 2019 after previously serving in the Minnesota House of Representatives from 2017 to 2019. Born in Mogadishu in 1982 and now residing in Minneapolis, she graduated from North Dakota State University with a BA in 2011.
