Representative Ilhan Omar, currently serving in the U.S. Congress representing Minnesota’s 5th district, has recently shared insights on her meetings and views through a series of tweets. She replaced former member Keith Ellison in 2019 and previously served in the Minnesota House of Representatives from 2017 to 2019.

On July 9, 2025, Rep. Omar tweeted about her meeting with Abdirahman Abdishakur Warsame, the former Special Envoy for the Somalia drought. In their discussion held at her Minneapolis office, they talked about “the work our office has done to support the diaspora and the growing threat of climate change.” “It was great to sit down with Abdirahman Abdishakur Warsame,” she stated.

The following day, on July 10, Rep. Omar expressed strong opposition to a recent budget proposal in another tweet. She described it as “a Big Ugly Betrayal,” criticizing its cuts to Medicaid and SNAP while allocating substantial funds to ICE and benefiting wealthy individuals. Omar emphasized efforts to fight for policies that prioritize working people.

Later that day, Omar highlighted the issue of pay inequality affecting Black women in recognition of #BlackWomensEqualPayDay. In her tweet, she pointed out that Black women are paid “66 cents on the dollar,” underscoring the systemic nature of this pay gap and calling for change: “Pay. Black. Women.”

Ilhan Omar was born in Mogadishu, Somalia in 1982 and moved to Minneapolis where she currently resides. She graduated from North Dakota State University in 2011 with a BA.
