Michelle Fischbach, a representative from Minnesota, announced that new trade policy changes introduced by the Trump administration and House Republicans aim to protect American sugar producers and support U.S. farmers. This statement was made on the social media platform X.

“The Trump Administration and House Republicans are putting American farmers first,” said Fischbach. “This new policy scales back Biden’s America-last foreign import practices and protects our sugar producers here at home.”

Recent U.S. trade policy changes have sparked debate over agricultural imports, particularly sugar. According to the Wall Street Journal, policymakers are considering new tariffs and quotas amid ongoing negotiations. Farm groups warn that increased sugar imports could lower prices and undermine domestic producers, prompting renewed calls for stronger protections for American agriculture.

According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the United States imported about 3.5 million metric tons of sugar in 2023, while domestic production was approximately 8.2 million metric tons, making imports a significant part of the national supply.

A report by the American Sugar Alliance indicates that recent increases in foreign sugar imports have driven down prices for U.S. farmers compared to previous years with tighter import controls. This has resulted in greater market volatility and profitability concerns for domestic producers.

Fischbach is a U.S. Representative from Minnesota’s 7th District, serving on the House Agriculture Committee. She is known for advocating policies that protect American farmers from unfair trade practices and support rural economic development, as profiled by Ballotpedia.
