Rep. Ilhan Omar, a U.S. Congress member representing Minnesota’s 5th district since 2019, has expressed her strong opposition to the GOP budget bill through a series of tweets. Omar, who succeeded Keith Ellison and previously served in the Minnesota House of Representatives, shared her thoughts on social media regarding recent legislative developments.

On July 3, 2025, Rep. Omar tweeted her statement following her vote against the GOP budget bill. She stated that she voted “NO” on the final version of the bill because “This bill is morally bankrupt and an attack on working people.”

Later that day, Rep. Omar provided an update after the passage of what she referred to as “the big ugly bill” in the House. She lamented that it was “a bad day in America,” noting that “17 million people will lose their healthcare,” children would face hunger, and it represented “the biggest transfer of wealth from the poor to the rich.” She concluded with a simple condemnation: “Shame.”

On July 4, 2025, Rep. Omar extended greetings for Independence Day while reflecting on its deeper meaning. She tweeted: “Happy 4th of July! Today we celebrate independence but also reflect on what freedom really means.” She emphasized that true patriotism involves striving for equal rights and opportunities for all citizens while acknowledging past progress and recognizing ongoing challenges.

Rep. Ilhan Omar was born in Mogadishu, Somalia in 1982 and currently resides in Minneapolis. She holds a BA from North Dakota State University.
