The Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT) is set to conduct aerial mapping in west central Minnesota and urges local residents to refrain from interfering with the temporary targets used in the process. The aerial survey is planned to cover areas along Highway 75, from north of Graceville to Highway 12 in Ortonville, and Highway 78, from north of Ottertail to Highway 210 in Battle Lake.
The mapping is scheduled to begin in April, dependent on favorable weather conditions. Aerial photography requires clear views and is best conducted after the snow has melted but before trees are in full leaf. To facilitate this, crews will mark the ground with an “X” as reference points for the photographers.
MnDOT employs aerial mapping to document current infrastructure and landscapes along its right of way, aiding in transportation planning and highway design. To achieve precise mapping, large white “X” targets are painted on paved surfaces, while plastic or fabric “X” targets are set on unpaved areas.
Survey teams record the coordinates and elevation of these temporary targets for the aerial photography company. Upon completing the photography, these targets will be removed.
Residents, particularly landowners, are requested not to disturb these targets until the mapping is finished. Correspondence explaining the process will be sent to those directly affected.
