Gregory Buck, an advocate for Minnesota Election Integrity Solutions, sent a letter to U.S. Sen. Tina Smith (D-Minnesota) urging her to support the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE America) Act as it awaits action in the Senate.
“I am writing to encourage your vote(s) to advance the SAVE America Act in the Senate. As you well know, this is legislation supported by 80% – 85% of Americans, including large majorities in Minnesota,” Buck said.
The letter comes as federal election legislation continues to be debated in Congress. The SAVE America Act passed the House in the current session and now awaits consideration in the Senate. If passed, it would require individuals registering to vote in federal elections to provide documentary proof of U.S. citizenship, such as a passport, REAL ID-compliant identification, or a certified birth certificate with photo identification, and would establish federal standards for verifying eligibility before voter registration is processed.
Recent polling cited by supporters of the measure found 83% of Americans favor the SAVE America Act, including more than 70% of Democratic voters.
Gallup polling has also found roughly 84% support for requiring photo identification to vote.
Minnesota does not require documentary proof of citizenship for all voter registration applicants in federal elections. Election integrity advocates have raised concerns about voter roll accuracy in close races, including in Scott County, and have called for stronger verification standards.
