The Minnesota Wild announced on May 3 that they have advanced to the second round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs after defeating the Dallas Stars in six games. The team will now face the Colorado Avalanche, considered by many as one of the top teams in the league.

This advancement marks a significant moment for both the organization and its supporters, as it is the first time in eleven years that Wild fans have experienced such playoff excitement. Goaltender Jesper Wallstedt said, “Obviously, this is massive for us, for the organization and for our fan base. We’ve just got to keep going. We know what the capabilities are within our team. We’re excited to go play Colorado.”

The Wild clinched their series against Dallas with a 5-2 victory at Grand Casino Arena, highlighted by Quinn Hughes’ go-ahead goal and two empty-net goals from Matt Boldy. Captain Jared Spurgeon acknowledged that beating strong opponents is part of progressing in playoffs, while Marcus Foligno added, “The best thing about having this sweet taste of victory is you want more of it. It’s such a great feeling. We’re excited for Round 2.”

During regular season matchups with Colorado, each team won twice—both securing shootout victories on home ice—and several players had standout performances including Kirill Kaprizov and Joel Eriksson Ek for Minnesota and Martin Necas and Nathan MacKinnon for Colorado. Wallstedt started three out of four games against Colorado during those meetings.

Looking ahead to their next challenge, coach John Hynes said he was pleased with his team’s defensive effort late in their series against Dallas: “There’s a lot of things that you can draw on with the identity of the team and how we play… as you continue to move forward, it starts with the guys’ commitment to play the way that they have played throughout the series.”

Reflecting on past playoff encounters between these teams—including memorable overtime wins—the current roster includes only Spurgeon and Jonas Brodin from previous deep playoff runs. As Brock Faber noted regarding preparation: “It’s on to Colorado, and that is our focus.”
