Minnesota State Representative Andrew Myers addressed constituents on Apr. 15, marking Tax Day by highlighting rising costs and ongoing financial pressures faced by suburban families in the state.
Myers said that over the past four years, residents have seen a range of new or increased taxes and fees, including a delivery fee, higher vehicle sales taxes, a gas tax increase, a new payroll tax, a metro-wide sales tax of one percent, higher car tab fees, as well as increases in child care costs, utility bills, and property taxes. He noted that these changes have forced many families to make difficult choices regarding their budgets.
“Over the past several months, I’ve received hundreds of emails from families who are feeling the pressure and making difficult decisions because of choices made at the Capitol,” Myers said. He added that additional proposals such as media taxes or digital advertising taxes could further impact affordability for Minnesota residents.
Myers stated his continued focus is on affordability issues through efforts like the Dollars & Sense Initiative: “Our Dollars & Sense Initiative is focused on lowering costs and putting money back in the pockets of Minnesota families. It includes practical, targeted proposals to address rising expenses and make our state more affordable.” He also mentioned ongoing work related to public health measures such as co-authoring House File 3965 to phase out chemicals linked to Parkinson’s disease.
In addition to economic concerns, Myers discussed transportation safety improvements along Highway 7—a corridor serving multiple communities—which has experienced nearly 1,200 crashes over ten years. He emphasized bipartisan cooperation for funding critical upgrades for student drivers and local residents alike.
Myers concluded by encouraging community engagement: “Our community is strongest when we come together, find common ground, and work toward practical solutions.” He invited constituents to continue sharing their perspectives with him directly.
