On November 5, Minnesota voters will head to the polls to decide several key legislative races. While the presidential election often captures most of the media’s attention, these down-ballot contests hold significant implications for local governance and small businesses.
In Minnesota, all 134 seats in the House are up for grabs. Additionally, a special election in the Senate could determine control of that chamber. The Democrats have maintained full control of state government since Governor Walz’s re-election in 2022. However, this has posed challenges for some small business owners.
Currently, Democrats hold a narrow majority in the House with a four-seat margin (70 D, 64 R). The outcome may hinge on fewer than two dozen competitive districts. Meanwhile, the Senate is evenly split at 33 Republicans and 33 Democrats following a recent resignation.
The Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party (DFL) has managed to retain its majority by trading rural seats for suburban ones. To maintain control, they must secure certain districts in Greater Minnesota currently represented by Democrats. Conversely, Republicans need to win at least two DFL-held seats while retaining their current positions and gaining suburban support to flip the House.
Several critical races are unfolding across Greater Minnesota:
– In House District 7B (St. Louis County), Republican Cal Warwas faces DFLer Lorrie Janatopoulos. This seat has shifted toward Republicans over recent years.
– In House District 14B (St. Cloud), incumbent Rep. Dan Wolgamott seeks re-election against Republican Sue Ek.
– In House District 18A (Nicollet County), DFL Rep. Jeff Brand runs against newcomer Erica Schwartz.
– In House District 26A (Winona), Republican Aaron Repinski competes with DFLer Sarah Kruger following Rep. Gene Pelowski’s retirement.
Republican-held seats also face competition:
– In House District 03A (Northeast Minnesota), Rep. Roger Skraba is challenged by Democrat Harley Droba.
– In House District 03B (Hermantown), Rep. Natalie Zeleznikar goes up against former judge Mark Munger.
– In House District 11A (Carlton County, Pine County), Jeff Dotseth faces Pete Radosevich once more.
– Finally, in House District 14A (St. Augusta), Bernie Perryman defends her seat against Abdi Daisane.
