Minnesota State Representative Harry Niska reported on May 1 that the final weeks of the 2026 legislative session are underway, with several key issues under debate in the state House.
One major topic is a bill introduced by House Democrats that would require Minnesota cities and counties to fly the state’s new flag or face a reduction in state funding. The proposal would reduce local government aid by ten percent for any entity choosing to display a different version of the state flag than the one made official in 2024. Local government aid is an important source of funding for communities, helping cover essential services such as police and fire departments. Several cities, including Champlin, Zumbrota, Elk River, and Inver Grove Heights, have continued to fly the historic version of the flag despite recent changes.
Niska said Republicans oppose this measure and noted that procedural hurdles remain because it was introduced after legislative deadlines had passed and lacks a companion bill in the Senate. He said these developments highlight what he sees as ongoing partisan divisions at the Capitol.
Federal law enforcement activity was also addressed. Niska reported that federal agencies recently served nearly two dozen warrants on suspected fraudulent Medicaid providers in Minnesota. He criticized Democratic leaders for what he described as insufficient oversight over these programs, saying accountability should extend to those who managed them.
Tax policy remains another area of disagreement between parties this session. According to Niska, House Republicans have proposed $4 billion in tax and fee relief measures aimed at reducing costs for Minnesotans, including lowering car tab fees to previous levels and providing a $1 billion property tax reduction. In contrast, he cited comments from a Democratic leader describing their party’s approach as “class warfare,” which Niska said demonstrates clear differences between party priorities.
The session continues as lawmakers work through remaining legislation before adjournment.
