Governor Tim Walz has announced a special election to fill a vacant state Senate seat in Minnesota’s District 6. This follows the resignation of a Republican senator. The district includes Cass, Crow Wing, and Itasca Counties.

The election will take place on April 29, 2025, as per the Writ of Special Election. If needed, a special primary election is scheduled for April 15, 2025.

Prospective candidates must submit their affidavits of candidacy and nominating petitions by April 1, 2025, at 5 p.m. The National Federation of Independent Business will evaluate candidates to determine their positions on issues affecting small businesses.

Governor Walz’s timely declaration of the special election is a response to ensure representation for the constituents of Senate District 6.
