Representative Ilhan Omar, who has served Minnesota’s 5th District in the U.S. Congress since 2019, recently shared updates on her work through a series of posts. The tweets addressed her ongoing engagement with the Somali diaspora, local political advocacy, and support for cultural initiatives.

On July 11, 2025, Omar wrote that she met with Abdirahman Abdishakur Warsame, the former Special Envoy for the Somalia drought. She stated: “I sat down with Abdirahman Abdishakur Warsame, the former Special Envoy for the Somalia drought, to discuss the work my office has done to support the diaspora and combat the growing threat of climate change.”

In another post on July 11, 2025, Omar described holding a press conference alongside local and state leaders from Minnesota’s 5th Congressional District. She commented: “I held a press conference with #CD5’s local and state leaders to call out the cruelty and immorality in Republicans’ big, ugly budget bill. We’re doing everything in our power to fight back and ensure Minnesotans can access the resources they need.”

Also on July 11, 2025, Omar noted her visit to an exhibit at the American Swedish Institute. She said: “I stopped by the American Swedish Institute for a tour of Salad Hilowle’s exhibit, Inscriptions, which explores the Somali diaspora and the Afro-Swedish experience.”

Omar was born in Mogadishu, Somalia in 1982 and currently resides in Minneapolis. She previously served in the Minnesota House of Representatives from 2017 to 2019 before being elected to Congress. Omar graduated from North Dakota State University in 2011 with a BA.
