U.S. Representative Ilhan Omar, who has represented Minnesota’s 5th district in Congress since 2019, posted a series of tweets on July 16, 2025, criticizing economic inequality and recent labor policy changes under former President Donald Trump’s administration.

In her first post at 19:00 UTC, Omar stated, “We don’t suffer from scarcity, we suffer from greed. The money is there. It’s just being hoarded by the wealthy while everyday people are struggling to afford groceries and rent.”

An hour later, at 20:06 UTC, she questioned the outcomes of Trump’s previous agreements with his political allies, writing, “I thought Trump made a deal with them. What’s going on with his ‘boys’, and in some cases, ‘gals?'”

At 21:30 UTC the same day, Omar criticized the Department of Labor during Trump’s tenure for rolling back worker protections. She wrote, “Removing child labor protections. Slashing safety inspections. Trump’s Department of Labor is on a roll and workers are the ones paying the price. No job should be a death sentence.”

Omar has been an advocate for progressive policies throughout her career in Congress and previously served in the Minnesota House of Representatives from 2017 to 2019. Born in Mogadishu, Somalia in 1982 and currently residing in Minneapolis, Omar succeeded Keith Ellison as representative for Minnesota’s 5th district and graduated from North Dakota State University with a bachelor’s degree in 2011.
