Rep. Ilhan Omar, a member of the U.S. Congress representing Minnesota’s 5th district since 2019, posted a series of tweets on February 25, 2026, highlighting her criticism of former President Donald Trump and the actions of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in Minnesota.
In her first tweet at 00:43 UTC, Omar stated, “We won’t let the nation forget the terror Donald Trump unleashed on Minnesota. Here’s my 4 guests for tonight’s State of the Union.”
An hour later, she addressed recent ICE activities in her community, writing on February 25 at 01:43 UTC: ‘”Operation Metro Surge” may have ended, but ICE’s terrorization of our community continues. I’m so grateful to be joined by constituents, like Aliya Rahman, for the State of the Union to share exactly how ICE continues to traumatize our state.’
Later that day at 18:12 UTC, Omar described an incident involving one of her guests during the State of the Union address: “My guest, Aliya Rahman, stood up silently in the gallery during the president’s speech for a short period of time, part of which other guests were also standing. For that, she was forcibly removed, despite warning officers about her injured shoulders and ultimately charged with”
Omar has represented Minnesota’s 5th District since replacing Keith Ellison in Congress in 2019. Before serving in Congress, she was a member of the Minnesota House of Representatives from 2017 to 2019. Born in Mogadishu, Somalia in 1982 and currently residing in Minneapolis, Omar graduated from North Dakota State University with a BA in 2011.
