Representative Ilhan Omar has taken to social media to express her views on recent legislative matters. Serving Minnesota’s 5th district in the U.S. Congress, Omar has been vocal on key issues impacting working-class citizens.

On April 9, 2025, Omar addressed a bill in the House aiming to overturn a rule that caps most bank overdraft fees at $5. She criticized the proposal, saying that it is “another gross giveaway to big banks at the expense of working people.” Omar declared her opposition by stating, “Voting NO.”

Later on the same day, Omar commented on the proposed 2025 Republican Budget. She described it as “a war on the poor and working people,” citing specific financial allocations, including $880 billion in cuts to Medicaid and $230 billion in cuts to food assistance. Furthermore, she pointed out the creation of over $14 trillion in new debt, which she claims is intended to fund $7 trillion in tax cuts for the wealthy.

Continuing her critique of recent legislative actions, Omar tweeted on April 10 about the priorities she believes the government should focus on. She stated, “We should be fighting for paid leave, affordable child care, and accessible job training.” She noted her disappointment that the House Republicans have instead introduced bills that, in her view, negatively impact workers and their paychecks.

Ilhan Omar is an influential figure in U.S. politics, representing Minnesota’s 5th district since 2019. She replaced Keith Ellison and previously served in the Minnesota House of Representatives. Born in Mogadishu, Somalia, in 1982, Omar obtained a BA from North Dakota State University in 2011 and resides in Minneapolis.
