Representative Ilhan Omar, serving Minnesota’s 5th district in the U.S. Congress, has been actively voicing her opinions on several legislative and individual matters. As a Co-Chair of the Congressional Cannabis Caucus, Omar disclosed on May 2, 2025, that she joined forces with Representative Dina Titus and cannabis advocates to advocate for cannabis laws focusing on equity. She emphasized the need for these laws to provide individuals across the nation with much-needed second chances.

On May 2, 2025, Omar expressed her honor in recognizing Tesfaye Deyasso on the House Floor. Deyasso was named the National Association of Letter Carriers’ 2025 National Hero of the Year for his heroic act of saving a man’s life, an achievement that Omar praised for its bravery.

Further demonstrating her commitment to workers’ rights, Omar attended CASA’s Immigrant and Worker Solidarity Rally. In a tweet from May 2, 2025, she underscored the vital role immigrant workers play in the nation and called for stronger federal protections for them. Omar also used this platform to advocate for Kilmar Abrego Garcia’s immediate return.

Ilhan Omar has represented Minnesota’s 5th District in the U.S. Congress since 2019, succeeding Keith Ellison. Before her congressional tenure, she served in the Minnesota House of Representatives from 2017 to 2019. Omar, aged 40, originally from Mogadishu, Somalia, resides in Minneapolis. She is a graduate of North Dakota State University, where she earned a BA in 2011.
