U.S. Representative Ilhan Omar, who serves Minnesota’s 5th district in Congress, addressed international and domestic humanitarian concerns in a series of posts on July 16 and 17, 2025.

On July 16, Omar wrote about the plight of Afghan refugees facing deportation: “Deporting Afghan refugees back to Afghanistan is a death sentence. Pakistan, Iran, and the United States all have an obligation to prevent these deportations.”

Later that same day, she commented on human rights issues in Pakistan: “The United States has a moral and strategic obligation to stand up for Pakistanis suffering human rights violations. At @TLHumanRights, I talked with @JaredGenser about the grave threats to Pakistani democracy.”

Turning her attention to domestic policy on July 17, Omar advocated for ending childhood hunger in the United States: “No child should go to bed hungry in the richest country in the world. If we can afford billion-dollar military budgets, we can afford universal school meals. Ending childhood hunger is a moral obligation.”

Omar has represented Minnesota’s 5th District since 2019 after serving in the Minnesota House of Representatives from 2017 to 2019. She was born in Mogadishu, Somalia in 1982 and currently resides in Minneapolis. Omar graduated from North Dakota State University with a bachelor’s degree in 2011.
