Rep. Ilhan Omar, who represents Minnesota’s 5th district in the U.S. Congress, posted a series of tweets on July 21, 2025, addressing issues ranging from police accountability to student loan reform and local community engagement.

In a tweet published at 14:08 UTC, Omar commented on ongoing concerns regarding police violence and accountability. She wrote, “Breonna was asleep in her own home. She was not a threat.

And yet again, the system is sending a message that there’s little to no accountability when Black lives are taken at the hands of law enforcement.

One day is not justice. We need real accountability, and we need it now.”

Later that day at 18:39 UTC, Omar addressed student loan policies under the Trump administration. She stated, “The rejection of applications is a reminder that the Trump admin is facilitating a broken student loan system.

When 31% of income-driven repayment applicants aren’t presented with a viable option, we know the system is rigged against borrowers.”

Omar also announced an upcoming event in her district. At 19:57 UTC she tweeted, “I’m hosting my July Town Hall with Richfield Mayor Mary Supple on Monday, July 28th, at 6pm CT! Join us for a conversation about how, from the local to federal level, we’re working to fight for the Fifth!

This event is free & open to the public. Register to attend below.”

Omar has served as representative for Minnesota’s 5th District since replacing Keith Ellison in 2019 and previously held office in the Minnesota House of Representatives from 2017 to 2019. Born in Mogadishu, Somalia in 1982 and currently residing in Minneapolis, she earned her BA from North Dakota State University in 2011.
