U.S. Representative Ilhan Omar, who represents Minnesota’s 5th district in Congress, recently used her social media platform to address a range of national issues, including gun violence, workers’ rights, and public health leadership.

On August 31, 2025, Omar posted about the ongoing problem of gun violence in America. She wrote, “Tackling gun violence shouldn’t be a Democrat or Republican issue. We should work together as Americans to stop another act of terror from happening again. That starts with a ban on assault weapons. Our children deserve to grow up without the fear and trauma of gun violence.”

The following day, September 1, 2025, she highlighted the importance of honoring workers beyond symbolic gestures. In her post, she stated: “Today we celebrate the workers who keep our communities running. But honoring workers means making sure people are paid a living wage, have safe workplaces, paid leave, and the freedom to organize. Workers are the backbone of this country, and they deserve nothing less.”

Omar also commented on public health policy in a September 2, 2025 tweet criticizing Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s influence on the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). She said: “Scientists, not anti-vaccine activists, should lead the CDC. RFK Jr. has spent years spreading conspiracy theories and undermining trust in vaccines. Now he’s dismantling our public health system. The consequences of this will be felt nationwide.”

Omar has represented Minnesota’s 5th District in Congress since replacing Keith Ellison in 2019 and previously served in the Minnesota House of Representatives from 2017 to 2019. Born in Mogadishu, Somalia in 1982 and now residing in Minneapolis at age 40, she graduated from North Dakota State University with a bachelor’s degree in 2011.
